In shortFor an early date, keep it short and well used: Lynn Canyon Park or the Discovery snowshoe trails on Mount Seymour in winter. Leave a trip plan with a friend, carry the 10 Essentials and call 911 early if anything goes wrong.

The North Shore mountains are close enough for an afternoon, which makes them tempting for a date. Pick something easy that you both can enjoy, and save the big hikes for when you know each other. Daylight is short in winter, so start early.

Lynn Canyon Park

Lynn Canyon has the only free suspension bridge in Metro Vancouver, with forest trails on the far side. It is a good choice when one of you is newer to hiking. Stay on the trails and away from the canyon edges.

Snowshoeing on Mount Seymour

In winter, Mount Seymour runs the Discovery Snowshoe Trails, which need a trail pass, and rents snowshoes and over-boots. Rentals stop an hour before closing, which is close to sunset, and no trails are lit. The resort also runs public tours, including a Chocolate Fondue tour.

Plan it the North Shore Rescue way

North Shore Rescue advises leaving a trip plan with a friend, carrying the 10 Essentials and setting a turnaround time. If you get lost, stay put rather than heading downhill, as North Shore ravines are steep and hard to get out of. Call 911 early.

Questions

Is a hike a good first date?

A short, busy trail can be. Choose somewhere well used, go in daylight and tell a friend where you are going and when you expect to be back.

Do I need a pass to snowshoe on Mount Seymour?

The resort's Discovery trails need a trail pass. The BC Parks and Metro Vancouver trails that start near the Mystery Express chair do not need a BC Parks day-use pass.

What should we do if we get lost?

Stay where you are, keep warm and call 911 and ask for police. North Shore Rescue says rescue is free and calling early helps.
